Lawrence is a quiet city with a friendly Midwestern atmosphere and a low crime rate. Founded in 1854, Lawrence is now a city of 80,000 people. It is located in the northeast corner of Kansas, about 40 miles (63 km) west of Kansas City and 30 miles (48 km) east of Topeka, the state capital.
In Kansas you will enjoy four distinct seasons – expect mild springs, hot summers, warm falls, and cold winters. Lawrence is surrounded by beautiful wooded hills and river valleys. Huge grassland prairies and wheat fields cover much of Kansas, offering lovely views, historic small towns and friendly people.
Life in Lawrence is pleasant and inviting. The city has a charming downtown shopping area with tree-lined streets and an outdoor sculpture exhibit. You will find many interesting shops, art galleries, restaurants, theaters and coffee shops.
Lawrence is also home to Haskell Indian Nations University, a university for Native American Indian students. If you are interested in learning more about American Indian culture, you can visit the Haskell campus, enjoy the annual Indian Market and Art Show, or attend the annual graduation Pow Wow (celebration).
