Students will be placed in a combination of courses that address their English skills, deepen their understanding of American culture and society, and help them become familiar with American business practices.

All students will take American Culture and Communication, Business Research Tutorial and Conversation Class. In addition, students with strong English skills will audit a KU School of Business course MKTG 310: Marketing. They will also take an English support course for the KU course; MKTG 310 Adjunct and the AEC course Speaking and Listening.

Students whose English skills are not strong enough to audit the KU course will take the AEC courses Speaking and Listening and Grammar for Communication in addition to American Culture and Communication, Business Research Tutorial and Conversation Class.

Lawrence Campus

American Culture and Communication - 3 days per week (Margaret Coffey)

Content: The nature of culture and the process of intercultural communication; culture specific information about dominant values and assumptions in the U.S. with an emphasis on international business settings; intercultural problem solving; American cultural values and assumptions; intercultural communication skills; current popular culture. MKTG 310: Marketing - 2 days a week. (Dennis Rosen)

Course Objective: To acquaint students with the basic principles of marketing from the point of view of the business firm.

Course Content: Topics include the structure of the marketing system, the nature of marketing management, consumer behavior, marketing research, product policy, channels of distribution policy, and analytical technique useful to marketing management. Students should be advised that purchase of the textbook for this course is mandatory and could cost between $50-$100 US. It is very unlikely that students will be able to sell their book back to the university bookstore. We want students to be aware of this before they come to campus.

MKTG 310 Adjunct. 3 days a week. (Kellie Smith Herrod)

Course Objective: To provide language support for students enrolled in MKTG 310 - Marketing with both reading and lecture materials for business/marketing and idiomatic vocabulary, listening comprehension of lectures, and reading comprehension. An additional objective is to make students aware of the cultural background and underpinnings of marketing in American society.

Course Content: Based on the readings and lectures of the MKTG 310 course. Additionally, students attend at least two hours of discussion groups and report what they observe and learn in the discussion sections they attend.

Business Research Tutorial - 2 days per week (Karen Erb, Jennifer Forth, Kellie Smith Herrod)

Course Content: Library and web-based research, gathering information, documenting information, developing questionnaires, interview preparation, administering surveys and interviews, transcribing interviews, written report, oral defense preparation and practice.

Speaking and Listening for Academic Purposes - 3 days per week.

Course Content: A variety of topics will be studied in depth to allow for refinement of listening and note taking skills. Students will be responsible for discussing content, debating, interviewing, summarizing and giving presentations on issues that are relevant to the topics being studied.

Grammar for Communication - 3 days per week

Course Content: Sentence structures and vocabulary will be practiced in a wide variety of activities requiring accurate, appropriate spoken and written English. These activities will range from in-class to out-of-class activities to group activities.

Conversation Class - 1 hour per week (Optional)

Course Content: Students will meet with AEC Conversation Leaders (current KU students) to discuss topics of interest and practice English in a natural setting.
