The Applied English Center of the University of Kansas (AEC) will welcome seventeen students from ACI Négoçia on January 15, 2007 for an 10-week program of intensive English and Business English study and cultural enrichments activities.

This program will provide you with a variety of experiences and study opportunities designed to strengthen your communication skills in English with a business-related focus, to deepen your understanding of American culture and society, and to allow you to examine American business practices.

Program Highlights:

Weekly tours of local Lawrence and Kansas City businesses

The opportunity to live on the KU campus and participate in campus activities

A wide variety of optional cultural activities

The chance to do in-depth research on a local business

A Jayhawk basketball game!

Important Notes!

There are several things to keep in mind that will help you make the most of your time at KU. Some of these things are items that you should bring with you so that you won't have buy them while you are here. Please read the items below carefully:

E-Tickets

Please purchase electronic tickets instead of paper tickets for your flights. With e-tickets, we can make changes to your tickets quickly and easily. Paper tickets can only be changed at the Kansas City airport, which is an hour away from campus. If we have no one available to provide transportation, you might also have to pay for a shuttle ride to the airport. E-tickets are a much better choice!

Arriving Healthy & Well-Rested

Please consider the importance of arriving in Kansas well rested to help fight off getting sick while here. An overseas trip to a different culture can be taxing, even though you are young, strong and healthy. In past years students who have been sick with viruses during the program really did not have the same positive experiences as those that were able to stay healthy. It also affected their ability to perform well as students. One of the nicest things you can do for yourself is to arrive feeling very rested.

Academics & Cultural Experiences

We have created a "balanced" program for you in which academic studies and cultural/social activities and free time are included. Those students who try to make this a vacation or if you plan to only study at the expense of learning about the US and making friends here, you will miss out on many of the benefits of studying overseas. We expect everyone to be good students and we want everyone to have fun!

Important things to bring with you:

Digital Cameras

We recommend that you bring your digital cameras with you. You camera will make it easy for you to get photos for your reports and Power Point presentations. Of course, they are also wonderful for all of those souvenir photos you’ll want to take!

Tape Recorders

Please bring a tape recorder to record your interviews of Lawrence business people for your research project. Each research pair needs 1 tape recorder. If you don't bring a tape recorder with you, you will be expected to buy one when you arrive in Lawrence at a cost of $10.00-$20.00.
